Deer Antler-Cutting Ceremony (Shika no Tsunokiri)
Mid-October (not yet announced)
The Deer Antler-Cutting Ceremony is a traditional event held every October at Nara Park. It is organized by the Kasuga Taisha Shrine and the Nara Deer Preservation Foundation. This practice dates back 340 years to the Edo Period and was originally initiated to prevent injuries to people and other deer during the fall mating season, when male deer (bucks) become more aggressive. After a Shinto ritual by the Kasuga Taisha Shrine to pray for safety during the event, trained staff known as "Seko" chase and carefully capture male deer within a fenced arena using ropes and bamboo poles. Once restrained, the antlers are safely sawn off with a special tool. The process is swift and humane, ensuring that the deer are not harmed. At the Kasuga Taisha Shrine, the deer of Nara are regarded as messengers of the gods and are protected as a national treasure. The cut antlers are offered to the shrine as sacred offerings. The ceremony reflects a unique harmony between humans, animals, and Shinto beliefs.Duration: Approximately 40 minutes per session, with 4-5 sessions daily.Admission: Paid (proceeds support deer preservation).*Details are subject to change depending on the situation. Please check the Nara Deer Protection Society website.
