Kanbutsu-e / Flower Festival
Friday, May 8, 2026 9:00-16:30
Kanbutsu-e is a memorial service held to commemorate the birthday of the Buddha. This traditional Buddhist event is observed across Japan. At Gangoji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is held every year on May 8th, which is close to April 8th on the lunar calendar. Visitors are treated to sweet tea. During the festival, a small statue of the newborn Buddha is placed in a decorative flower-covered pavilion called a Hanamido ("Flower Hall"). Visitors gently pour sweet tea (amacha) over the statue, reenacting the legend of the Buddha’s birth, when heavenly beings are said to have bathed him in sweet rain. The ritual is an expression of respect and joy, inviting people of all ages to reflect on the teachings of the Buddha. The temple grounds are often decorated with flowers.
