Held annually at Futaiji Temple, the Narihira-ki is a memorial service honoring Ariwara no Narihira (825–880), a renowned poet and nobleman of the early Heian period (794-1185). The ceremony typically takes place on May 28, the date traditionally associated with Narihira’s death.Ariwara no Narihira is widely considered the model for the romantic protagonist in The Tales of Ise (Ise Monogatari), one of the most celebrated works of classical Japanese literature. Futaiji, also known as "Narihiradera" (Narihira’s Temple), was founded by a relative of Narihira and serves as a spiritual and literary tribute to his legacy.A Buddhist ceremony is conducted in the main hall to pray for the peaceful repose of Narihira’s soul. The temple grounds often exude a calm and reverent ambiance, with seasonal flowers, such as Narihira camellias, in bloom. There will also be a special opening of the Tahoto Pagoda, an important cultural property.The Narihira-ki provides a unique opportunity to reflect on the legacy of one of Japan’s most romantic and culturally influential figures in the very place associated with his memory.
